Truth: Red, White & Black 7

January 9th, 2009 - Respond

Baker absolutely nails one of the two important pages. He only does okay on the other; the momentum carries it.

What an abject failure. Morales’s script has these wonderful moments; Baker just can’t properly translate them.

An all new narrative approach does not help and the art still fails. Again, if only the art were the right fit.

Truth: Red, White & Black 4

The issue’s art’s a disaster. Most of the reading’s spent trying to imagine how it’d work with appropriate art.

The pacing’s all wrong but the dialogue is excellent. The art during the experiments works fine, but only then.

Another one of Brubaker’s fake arcs, just a lead-in to the next big one. I don’t mind; I can’t wait for whatever’s next.

Same art problems, but Brubaker crafts a fine adventure for the new Cap. Both modern and retro, it’s great superheroing.

Brubaker’s comfortable with Bucky in a smaller arc. The art’s iffy, mimicking the regular tone; not doing anything new.

Truth: Red, White & Black 2

There are scenes where the art fits and scenes where it does not. It is iffy–the horrific events play shallow.

I hate to say it… I’m not wild about Baker’s art as a fit for the story. Maybe I’m overreacting. Solid stuff.

Awesome close, but Brubaker almost sets the bar too high. This issue finally has the right action slash gab combination.

What’s with the goofy, Jim Lee boot shot at the end? Regardless, a great issue; Brubaker’s Cap work is his current best.

But apparently when Brubaker does an issue-long fight scene, it works. He opens it with tension and never lets up on it.

De La Torre’s art is fantastic–he does well with the fight scenes, even if Brubaker pads a tad much. The twist is neat.

It goes by too quick–Brubaker’s action scenes in Cap always do. The opening revelation is good though. Nice flashbacks.

Brubaker doesn’t miss a beat. But Epting has got some problems with faces–Bucky, Hawkeye and Fake Steve all look alike.
